Tanya D. Marsh began her legal journey with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and political science from Indiana University in 1994. After graduating from I.U., she was selected to work as a Governor’s fellow under Governor Evan Bayh. After the fellowship, she served as Bayh’s Assistant Director of Planning and Communication. She then attended Harvard Law, graduating cum laude in 2000 and being admitted to the Indiana Bar the following year.
After graduating from Harvard Law, Tanya served as a law clerk for the Honorable Theodore R. Boehm, Justice, Supreme Court of Indiana. She has since practiced in large law firms, as an in-house attorney for a large property developer/landlord, and independently. In 2016, Tanya became a partner at McNeelyLaw LLP, bringing to the firm her unique expertise and talents. She is also a tenured professor at Wake Forest University in North Carolina where she teaches property law, estate law, and the only funeral and cemetery law course in the nation.
As she has built her expertise in property and funeral law, Tanya has become a member of many different industry associations. In addition to the Indiana Bar Association, she is also a member of the American Bar Foundation and the Real Property, Trusts, and Estate Law Section of the American Bar Association, where she serves as the chair of the Legal Education Committee. Tanya is also a valued member of the American College of Real Estate Lawyers, the Association of American Law Schools, the National Funeral Directors Association, and the International Cemetery, Cremation, and Funeral Association. She practices not only in the state courts of Indiana, but also in the United States District Courts for the Northern and Southern Districts of Indiana and the Supreme Court of the United States.
In addition to being a respected professor and an accomplished attorney, Tanya has published close to two dozen articles and has contributed to several books. As a member of the American Law Institute, she is also a Reporter for the Restatement of the Law (Third) of Torts and an Adviser for the Restatement of the Law (Fourth) of Property. She has published numerous books on various subjects such as commercial leasing, property law, and funeral law, including co-authoring the seminal casebook on funeral and cemetery law. Also, she has her own podcast on funeral and cemetery law, “Death, et. seq.” which is currently in its second season.
